DIY: Fabric Ball

With Christmas around the corner, I thought I’d better get a move-on with crafty gifts and decorations. This is an easy one. You can easily whip this one up in an evening, sitting in front of the TV. Easy-peasy. All you’ll need for this project is; a foam ball (I used a 6″ one), hot glue gun, fabric cut into squares, wire, ribbon, scissors, and a pencil.

First twist some wire into a loop and press the two ends in opposite directions into the foam ball. The wire loop will hold the ribbon for hanging. Then, take a square of fabric, wrap it around the tip of a pencil, add a dot of hot glue, and then push into the foam ball. Repeat until the entire ball is covered in fabric.

This project can easily be changed up with different fabric choices for different occasions and events. Imagine all white fabric balls with contrasting ribbon at a wedding? Gorgeous. In this case, I’ve got Christmas on the brain, and here’s how it turned out:

Lastly add your ribbon. Simply tie the two ends in a knot. Keeping the knot under the wire loop, cut a decorative detail into the raw edges of the ribbon. I like the classic triangle cut out or snake tongue shape. And, there you have it! Great as a gift… or just make a bunch for yourself, and host a party!

Lovely! Where are you going to hang it?

Thanks Courtney! Y’know… I think I might make a few of these and alternate christmas stockings and balls along the fp mantle. Or, closer to Christmas, hang them over my exterior light sconces at the front door — paired with a wreath on the front door… could be really great! I’ll have to wait and see after I get a few more made. Makes great gifts for friends too!

That’s such a cute idea! Just curious, though–about how many squares of fabric did you use, and do you remember how big your squares were?

Thanks again for a cute idea!

Thanks Karen. I bought a half metre of fabric and probably used 90% of it for one ball. The ball was a 6″ in diameter. Each square was approx. the size of the palm of my hand. Hope that helps!

Great idea – thanks for the tutorial. My sister is using a similar fabric strip idea for a wreath.
